Many people are aiming to stay at home this Christmas. Some are even looking forward to a family-free day due to COVID! I love the idea of curling up with a book on Christmas day. At the moment I am reading a children’s story, The Milky Way Railroad by Kenji Miyazawa. In this tale, a fatherless boy who is bullied at school discovers just what he is looking for at the end of his street and sets out on an intergalactic journey. There are so many other great winter stories all about unfreezing hearts and minds.
Life Coaching is all about reconnection and rediscovering inner resources. Connection is just one module that we work on in Narrative Life Coaching’s keynote three-stage course Communicate Your Story. One of the modules we work on is listening – to the notes at the back of the orchestra, not just the front. The effects of listening, as we know, can be transformative. In A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Scrooge goes from someone who cannot listen, even to the sound of ‘Merry Christmas’, to someone who wants to listen to everyone and everything: ‘Not a latent echo in the house, not a squeak and scuffle from the mice behind the panelling, not a drip from the half-thawed water spout in the dull yard behind, not a sigh among the leafless boughs of one despondent poplar, not the idle swinging of an empty store-house door, no, not a clicking in the fire, but fell upon the heart of Scrooge with a softening influence and gave a freer passage to his tears.’
