People often ask me why I founded Narrative Life Coaching. I always had a sense that I had something distinctive to contribute to the world but I also knew that I was being held back. I had followed the script well. I had an international career working in the corporate charity sector and I had met my ideal partner and published a book. I was like you. I was a doer.
I did so much. I should have been happy but I still didn’t feel fulfilled. Then, a couple of years back, I started studying for a postgraduate research degree in how storytelling and narrative can transform people’s lives. Through taking that degree, I learnt that it’s due to the small changes people make that they are able to take the most impressive steps forward in their lives. I had the skills and experience to create something very unique but I just didn’t have the mindset to bring it about. I didn’t know what the missing piece was until I worked with a life coach.
Accountability
I chose a life coach rather than a mentor or a therapist because I knew I had a definite goal, something to achieve by a certain date. But I also needed to find someone who would hold me accountable to my future and who could also offer some insight into why I might not be achieving my vision as fast as I wanted to. It was a success! I launched NLC in 2020-2021. It’s so important to find someone who will hold you accountable to achieving your vision. You need to have a strategy and a timeline within which you are going to achieve it otherwise it will be like throwing mud at a wall, very little will stick.
Top tips for achieving your vision
Here are my top tips to getting started on achieving your vision and sticking to your goals in 2022-2023:
Write down your vision for the year and then put it somewhere safe where you can come back to it.
Set a new daily goal: something small to start with e.g. 15 minutes more walking, yoga, running, painting, gardening or writing in your journal, per day.
Tell someone what you are doing with your goal and why you are doing it. Make sure they hold you accountable.
Note the difference that your new daily goal is making to your experience of life.
I’d love to know how you get on – send me an email or DM me on IG at NarrativeLifeCoaching
